Kindly allow me to reply to the letter titled, ‘The next President of Malta,’ by correspondent Saviour Sammut (MaltaToday, February 22, 2004).
One wonders why hypocritical Maltese socialists, such as correspondent himself, pretend that a President of the Republic of Malta should not be Nationalist, whereas, and not everyone has forgotten, throughout the sixteen years of Maltese socialist regime, no Nationalist was ever chosen as President of the Republic.
As for the increase in ‘legislative and executive powers,’ - also mentioned in this same letter - one wonders why this increase is now being campaigned for by (former), Mintoffian socialists. This is because there now happens to be a Nationalist Government, whereas no Socialist correspondent ever felt obliged to air similar views whenever a Maltese Socialist Government was in office because, in all probability, they were then afraid to speak out.
As for ‘nepotism and clientelism’ one wonders whether correspondent was referring to the Mintoff years of socialist minority rule.
