Thank you Eddie

Joseph Muscat
Mosta

With great sadness, I write these few lines, not to eulogize Dr Eddie Fenech Adami, because history will take care of that, with golden letters, but to exercise my duty to say to you ‘Thank you,’ ‘Grazzi Eddie.’
Allow me to address you ‘Eddie’ the battle cry of all those thousands who followed you, and still are following you, to all the corners of the island even in troubled waters.
In 1987 you dismantled our ‘Berlin Wall’ and since then liberty and democracy were bestowed back and flourished. We were free again, free to eat what we please, to wear what we like, to speak in public without checking who is near you, free to demonstrate if one wants without being beaten, gassed or ‘framed’ by the state police. For me these are the best gifts that you bestowed to all of the Maltese, among others that everybody can touch and feel.
I hope that on 1 May of this year all Malta will see you, and only you, perhaps for the last time in Brussels, at the gathering for the enlargement ceremony of the EU along with 24 other Nations of which Malta is the smallest, but thank you for making Malta as big as them.
‘Grazzi’ once more’ may God bless you and give you strength.
