L-Istrina
returns triumphant in record charity bonanza
Labour MP’s ignore boycott directive
G’Mangia - Istrina hit new highs yesterday. Until going
to the print, the live programme on PBS had raised over Lm 700,000
The startling figure exceeds last year’s figure despite
a boycott ordered against the programme by Dr Alfred Sant, the Malta
Labour party leader. The programme hosted by popular host Peppi
Azzopardi hit at the hearts of Maltese ensuring success by the many
gifts which included a give-away car every hour. The programme had
one major highlight with the appearance of Labour MPs Karmenu Vella
and Profs Louis Buhagiar who opted to ignore Dr Sant’s directive
and visit the PBS live set. The figure collected dwarfed the Lm44,000
collected during a Super One so called charity marathon screened
on Friday which featured Alfred Sant reading a St Francis prayer.
Early on in the day, the administration at Super 1 made it a point
to contact all Super 1 employees to ensure that they would not participate
in Istrina. But the advice was apparently ignored by the acting
crew of Simpatici and Super 1 TV presenter Sandro Mangion.

Goodbye
2002. Hello 2003
Malta was one step closer to Europe in 2002. In a gruelling year
of negotiations Malta settled for special arrangements with the
European Union Commission. Ship repair, hunting, property and
fishing were given special treatment, yet at the end of the day,
the decision over European Union membership will hang over the
competition in the market and job opportunities. READ
