Former Labour thug interrogated in Cauchi murder investigation

"I say that Lino Cauchi was never my accountant, I met him once, twice at the most," Piju Camilleri told the court as tears rolled down his cheeks.

"I knew Lino Cauchi because he was my brother’s accountant.…my brother had suggested that they should use Lino Cauchi as their accountant instead of himself."

"I met Cauchi for the first time in the office of Joe Pace in Merchants Street. We were all there including Lino, Joe Borg, Victor Balzan, myself and Notary Saydon."

"In this meeting, Lino Cauchi remained outside."

"My brother presented the accounts he had prepared to Joe Borg and Victor Balzan. They agreed with what my brother had presented and asked him to keep the books, and said that there was therefore no need for Lino Cauchi’s services."

This was the evidence given under oath by Piju Camilleri in a libel case instituted against the newspaper Il-Gens in 1993.
But investigations carried out by MaltaToday show that Piju Camilleri was grossly off the mark when he gave his evidence.
