Tuna spotting Foreign tuna-fishing trawlers ploughing the seas off Malta are using small private planes based at Gudja airport to spot schools of blue fin tuna. [READ MORE] PS Pullicino promises close monitoring Environmentalists are concerned that abusive developers might be able to take advantage of a legal notice that essentially spells the end of Planning Authority permits for certain types of alterations. They are also sceptical of a reassurance from Parliamentary Secretary George Pullicino that the authorities will be closely monitoring the relaxation of the regulations. Following the introduction of Development Notification Order 2001certain developments, including the construction of washrooms, the alteration of existing swimming pools, internal changes to commercial establishments, building structures in backyards and the replacement of timber balconies no longer require a PA permit or else require only a notification. Mr Pullicino stressed that enforcement action would be taken against abusers. But environmentalists fear that the regulations may be abused, with washrooms ending up as apartments and traditional timber balconies replaced by jarring aluminium. READ FULL STORY
